About Us

The Aphasia and Disability Biking Group provides a great opportunity for people living with Aphasia or other disabilities to get together and enjoy the outdoors.

We organise bike rides within Canterbury as well as annual bike trips to explore different trails around Aotearoa New Zealand. Our rides provide a supportive atmosphere where participants can have fun, get some exercise, and socialise with others.

What is Aphasia?

Aphasia is a language disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate.

The brain has damage to language centres usually on the left side of the brain. This is often a result of a stroke or head injury.

Aphasia can cause problems with speaking, understanding language, reading, writing and recognising numbers.

Aphasia is different for each person but it doesn't have any affect on someone's intelligence.

People affected by other disabilities

The biking group was initially formed to support people with Aphasia or a disability resulting from a stroke. The group is now open to other people with a disability who would like to take part in our activities.

Some of our participants ride recumbent bikes. This takes away balance issues by being able to sit down. The bikes can also be adjusted to suit each rider's needs.
